It was the shouting that ignited the panic. Sensing their mothers’ terror, the children started to scream. Before long, the chapel was in an uproar. Isabeau and Godiva couldn’t do anything to quell the hysteria. Fear had a life of its own; like a wild beast rampaging through the chapel, it was uncontrollable. When the doors to the chapel moaned under the pounding from the outside, the women let out shrieks of anguish that turned Isabeau’s bowels to water. What had these women endured, to respond in such a way? Isabeau was ashamed to realize she hadn’t really made much effort to hear their stories. Content to tend their wounds, some only superficial, others more sinister and serious, she hadn’t really wanted to hear about their emotional pain. Was she really that indifferent to suffering? She would have said “no,” but the evidence surrounding her suggested she had indeed been oblivious to their humiliation and torment.

The pounding on the doors stopped. Isabeau was brought back to the present by the quiet whimpering of the women. She moved closer to the doors in hopes of hearing what was going on outside. She jumped when she heard her name being called.

She rushed to the doors and tried to lift the heavy oak plank that held them secure. It was too heavy. She needed help. Most of the women stood staring with hollow expressions. It was Godiva and Beatrice who came to her aid. Between the three of them, they managed to lift the plank so Isabeau could open the door. She was greeted by her husband.

His expression held a fierce quality to it, but as he met her eyes, she saw something pass behind them that caused her chest to tighten.

“There has been an attack on a party making their way here.” The anger was discernible in his tone. “There are many wounded; I need your help.”

Isabeau had so many questions, but before she could formulate any of them, he was gone.
